Historic Hancock Park Remodel

This classic English Revival home from the 1920’s needed desperately to be reimagined for the way a family lives today.  Open floor plans evolved for a reason.  We want to move through the spaces in our house with less obstructions.  So the challenge, and the risk, when redesigning a historic home, is to update the function and flow while maintaining and enhancing the period character.

In the original layout, the living spaces were formal, isolated from the informal spaces.  The kitchen was a utility space for the help to cook in and serve the family in the adjoining breakfast and dining rooms.  The rear yard was for hanging laundry.

Upon entering the house, the choice was to go left to the living room or right to the dining room.  This layout tightly controlled movement of guests, containing them within the front formal areas.  By adding a simple arched opening at the back of the entry, guests now have an option to continue to the lusciously landscaped rear yard.  Another arch replaces the wall that isolated the kitchen from the breakfast room, so now one can move easily between the informal spaces and the formal, mixing interior and exterior, family and friends.

Now that the kitchen has opened to the rest of the house, it has been recast as an elegant gathering place - while maintaining functionality.  The majestic matching range and hood impart an old-world grandeur and serve as a magnificent focal point for the remodel.  Lower cabinets, custom color-matched to the range, along with Calacatta marble countertops and Moroccan tile walls, reintroduce strong color choices and textures more common to earlier periods of design.   In order to keep the space clutter-free, some of the messier functions were removed to an adjacent large butler’s pantry.  Back-up refrigeration, an additional dishwasher, and ample pantry space provide overflow storage, which facilitates catering as needed for a family that loves to entertain.
